We are so excited to be carrying the wonderful handspun yarn from the talented April of Lulubeans.
Here is what she has to say about her yarn:

Our yarns are all handspun from high quality, handpainted fibers. Yarn weight, fiber content, yard quantity and other specifics are listed with each individual yarn. All yarns are carefully handwashed before they appear in the yarn shop. Please note that colors may vary a tiny bit from monitor to monitor. We hope that our handspun yarns will inspire and enhance your fiber creations. Have fun creating!

April's yarn is beautiful...stop by the shop to see for yourself!

five and a half journals

I absolutely love journals, cannot seem to get enough either for myself or for the shop. I have loved the journals over at Five and a Half for a very long time. Well, they are finally lining the shelves here at Edith and Edna.

Here is a little information about them and their awesome journals, taken from their website:

Five and a Half is a Brooklyn-based bookmaking and design studio that I started in the spring of 2006, when I began creating a line of journals that are functional, lightweight, and made with sustainable materials.

Each journal is filled with pages of sugarcane fiber and postconsumer recycled paper, a textweight surface that is ideal for writing, drawing, and painting, while leaving the planet's dwindling supply of trees untouched. There are useful details present in each journal ~ an inner pocket for looseleaf notes, and a perfect-bound spine so that each book opens flat for writing and drawing across the pages. The cover designs are made in limited editions, featuring original illustrations or photography.

Light and functional, each handmade journal is filled with 3 shades of sugarcane and recycled text weight paper in cream, white and tan; a resilient spine that opens flat for writing and drawing across pages; and an envelope-style inner pocket.

5” x 7 1/2”; 75 pages

$ 28.00

So come down and see for yourself what makes these journals so wonderful!

over the raindough

Sept_6_10_copy

Over the Raindough is back in stock!! We love the philosophy behind this company. Here is a little bit about them I took from their website:

Over the Raindough is a family-owned company operating out of America's Heartland in Kansas City.

Our love for modeling dough comes from our kids, but we didn't like the look and smell of the other brands, and we set out to make something better.

Because our kids have some external food and environmental allergies, we wanted our modeling dough to be as pure and natural as possible.

We have always been big supporters of organic products, from the food we eat to the beds we sleep on. So we made a commitment to use only the most wholesome and natural organic ingredients available. Our products cost more to produce, but we feel it's worth it. Our priority is to protect our children's future by making the world a healthier and more inviting place to play!

We couldn't agree more. I can tell you that my seven year old (who also happens to be wearing the moniker smiley shirt, which are also back in stock) loves the dough. She says, "It smells so good! And I like the way it feels."

So all scents are back in stock, and are now downstairs in our children's corner.

coco & milkweed

Berries SnakeLargeTubetree

Coco & Milkweed arrived today! I first heard about this cool company from Coco's Nona. It all started when she came into the shop (I think she lives in or near Portland) and said I had to go to their website immediately. Such wonderful designs, and many of the shirts are organic. They have things for infants, toddlers, Men and Women. So thank you, Coco's Nona, for telling me about them. And thank you, Coco & Milkweed, for having such cool stuff!

Betsy Thompson at Edith & Edna

Betsy

We are excited to introduce the newest artist in our gallery: Betsy Thompson. Betsy has been a long time friend of Edith & Edna's (as well as a short-time employee) and we couldn't be more thrilled to see all of her wonderfully creative collages hanging in our basement gallery. Her work will be on display for the months of September and October.

Here is a little info about the fabulous Betsy:

An educator by training, Betsy Thompson is now a full-time mother, artist, and illustrator living in Portland, Maine. She has a strong background in the arts and has worked in a variety of mediums including printmaking, drawing, watercolor, acrylic, batik, ceramics, and mixed media collage.

One of Betsy’s primary goals as a collage artist is to make art more accessible and to engage her viewers, adults and children alike, by drawing them in through the use of color, movement, shapes, and story-telling. Her work is notable for the use of bright, inviting  color, creative energy and whimsical imagery.

Common themes in Betsy’s collages include children and families, the ocean, birds, fruit, fish, Asian motifs, and the idea of home. She is inspired by patterns in nature, organic shapes, vintage and contemporary children’s book illustrations, parenthood, mid-century modernism, expressionism, and her life by the sea.

Tonight is First Friday Art Walk, so come down between 5pm and 8pm for the opening (plus, there might be a little wine and cheese). Hope to see many of you tonight!

Thank you Apartment Therapy!

Thank you Janie for the lovely write up for Apartment Therapy Nursery. Both Julie and I read your website daily and love all the inspiration you provide. We hope you will come back and visit when we are both in the shop!
